2. Cangshan, Zhongzhou Island and Taijiang

In 1842 after the Sino-British "Nanjing Treaty" was ratified, Fuzhou became one of the first five Chinese ports forced to open for foreign trade. It was also a major distribution center for Chinese teas and porcelains. A great number of foreign ¡°gold diggers¡± thronged to the place. By the year 1870, Cangshan and Zhongzhou Island along the Minjiang River became the residential areas of foreigners, where Western-style buildings, clubs, libraries and tennis courts were erected. .

Since China launched the reform and opening policy, Fuzhou¡¯s largest and best residential areas have been constructed along the Minjiang River. A host of large bridges have also been built.
