5. Churches

As early as in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Catholic Church was introduced to Fuzhou. After the Opium War, many foreign missionaries returned to Fuzhou. They set up churches and preached in foreign languages, Chinese mandarin and Fuzhou dialect. In 1850 an English preacher had a stone church built on the southern bank of the Minjiang River, facing to the traditional Chinese temple

Now a variety of religions coexist in Fuzhou. During the Spring Festival, the event of ¡°Gods Parade¡± in Fudong Village, Changle, Fuzhou, the icons of gods clad in traditional Chinese costumes contrast with the Western-style church at the front of the village.

The Fanchuanpu Church (right) was rebuilt in 1933. It is the largest Catholic church in Fujian. The churches set up by foreign missionaries have become a unique religious and cultural landscape in Fuzhou.
